As part of a recent video series, Ask Google Bot on YouTube, John Mueller, Google’s Search Advocate, explained whether or not there might be a SEO advantage depending on the CMS system used by a company.
He begins by stating that CMS is not a ranking factor. Essentially, Google doesn’t really care what happens on the back-end of a website, only how things appear to the user. You can send the same signals to Google whether you use WordPress, Wix, a number of other CMS systems, or no CMS at all. Muller says:
“As far as I know, our search systems are not looking for any particular content management system to treat it differently. For us, a CMS is just one way to create web pages. Google systems don’t focus on how the page was created. Instead, they focus on the end result. Hand-created web pages can be just as good as those generated by WordPress, Wix, Squarespace, or similar.
Good pages are key to breaking the SEO code
Mueller also goes on to say that great looking pages can be created using any of the leading content management systems. The important thing is to create pages that perform well. Indeed, SEO is not a proprietary formula to which a single CMS developer has access. Likewise, SEO is not a highly guarded secret (although it can be complex and confusing). If you apply good SEO basics, you can achieve positive ranking results no matter what CMS you use. The expert goes on to say:
“As far as I know, all traditional CMS systems can create pages that perform well in search. For the most part, SEO isn’t magic. vendors can include SEO elements if they wish.There are slight differences between systems, just as all web pages are slightly different.For the average site owner, either they all work well for search ready employment, or they can easily be tuned to do so with a few settings or plugins.
The short and sweet answer is that your CMS will not affect SEO in any way. Feel free to choose the CMS that offers the most benefits to your team, without worrying about SEO. The most important thing is to make sure you follow SEO best practices, however you create and host your content.
